John B Garst

John B. Garst, 83, of Siloam Springs, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the Ozark Terrace Nursing and Rehab in Rogers.

John was born in Siloam Springs on July 29, 1934, the son of Ben F. Garst and Pauline Andrews Garst. He married Helen Catherine Upshaw in 1959 in Dallas, TX.  John received his Bachelors in Medical Science from the University of Arkansas, and his PhD in Theology from the Dallas Theological Seminary. He was a Certified Medical Technologist, a Certified Allergy Physician Assistant and a Certified Teacher for teaching English as a Second Language. He was an ordained Minister and an Ordained Deacon as well as serving as a missionary in Peru from 1968 -1970 and in Thailand from 2002 – 2008. He worked for several clinics and laboratories as a Allergy Physicians Assistant.

John enjoyed life including fishing, running marathons, bicycling, reading and horticulture. He was a member of Harvard Avenue Baptist Church where he was very active including teaching Sunday school and working in AWANA. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Helen Garst of the home; three sons, John Dee Garst and wife Jacqui of Iowa, LA, James Benjamin Garst and wife Shelley of Siloam Springs, AR, and Peter Marshall Garst and wife Stephanie of Bella Vista, AR; one daughter, Andrea Karen Garst of Fayetteville, AR; nine grandchildren, Zachary Friedman, Sam Friedman, Kayleigh Garst, Joshua Garst, Allyson Garst, Jessica Garst, Joy Garst, Jonathan Garst, and Aaron Garst.

Visitation will be held at the Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral home in Siloam Springs on Friday,May 12, 2018 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm

Funeral service will be held at the Harvard Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 2:00pm.  Pastor Tad Thompson and Dr. Ubben will officiate the service and burial will be conducted at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Siloam Springs.
